In shops and at exhibitions, we encounter handicraft as a product or artwork, the result of a finished work. The ambition with this book is instead to show the process and the person behind it: the making, the tools and everyday life.
In 2022, Sweden's oldest arts and crafts cooperative, Arvika Konsthantverk, turns 100 years old. The current twenty-nine members work in various materials such as ceramics, textiles, wood, blacksmithing, brush binding and leather. All have been documented through workshop visits, interviews and photos. VERKSTAD ties together the collected material and forms a time document. The reader is taken on a journey and gets to meet artisans and their thoughts on tradition, the role of the craft in society and the field's opportunities and challenges in the future. The story of a guild is woven forward, where different threads tie these people together. Together, they form a mycelium that shapes the living arts and crafts that thrive in Värmland today.
